Prom Night - Over Rated Film

September 4, 2008

The other night i excitedly rented the film Prom-night. It received raves from every single person I know that went to go see this film in theaters. However I was fairly disappointed with the quality of the story line. The story line lacked depth and attention to detail. Some scenes just left you wondering and you had to come up with your own conclusion to things, which was annoying and confusing. When I pay to see a film i expect to be kept at the edge of my seat the whole way through, this movie did not offer this. Most scenes were derived from one the first very first scenes in the movie where to killer is murdering Britney Snows mother. Frankly, there is just too much piercing to the ears with girls high pitched screaming in practically every scene of the movie, very annoying. I do not recommend this film if you like thrillers, this movie is more of a chase the psycho sort of movie. Not something I would willingly waste my money another time.

Hollywood picks 25 stars headed for “Walk of Fame”

June 19, 2008

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Cartoon character Tinkerbell, singer Shakira and “Iron Man” Robert Downey Jr. and actress Cameron Diaz were among a diverse group of 25 stars named on Thursday to join the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce said the celebrities will each get their star on its Walk of Fame next year, but the dates have not been announced.

The Walk of Fame is a stretch of sidewalk lining either side of Hollywood Boulevard on which celebrities in music, movies, television and other entertainment arenas have their names emblazoned in brass set into large, pink terrazzo stars.

For celebrities, a star can be a memorial that lasts for decades, and millions of tourists who visit downtown Hollywood annually get to see the names, talk about their favorite actors and actresses and take pictures near the stars.

A committee of the Chamber of Commerce chose the 25 stars from among hundreds of nominations.

Others on the list include director Tim Burton, and actors Sir Ben Kingsley, William H. Macy and Hugh Jackman. Among the television stars are Macy’s wife, Felicity Huffman, producer Mark Burnett and music stars include Kenny “Baby Face” Edmonds and disco-era band The Village People.

Invasion

May 16, 2008

This is a remake of the 1956 movie “The Invasion of the Body Snatchers.”

A space shuttle crashes back to earth, bringing back with it a dangerous bacteria. The bacteria infects people through body fluids, such as spit and vomit. When the nfected person goes into r.e.m. sleep then the bacteria takes over. This is where the remake differs from the original. There are no pods in this version, the person just goes under a transformation of sorts, with stringy stuff covering their body during the process. The person loses their personality and all emotions.

A psychiatrist finds out that one of her patients and her son are safe from the infection due to a severe strain of chicken pox. With this news, she tries to get her son to safety so that a cure could be made from his blood. She is already infected and is doing anything she can to stay awake. If they are caught, she will be forced to sleep and her son will be killed.

Finally, after almost being caught several times, the two of them reach safety and one year later, everyone is cured but can not remember what happened.

Isolation

May 16, 2008

What do you get when you add a desperate need for money and quest for faster breeding cattle? A horrifyingly infectious mutation in rural Ireland!

Dan, a farmer in a remote part of Ireland, is on the verge of losing his cattle farm. He agrees to let a scientist inject one of his cows with a growth serum. Late one night, the cow goes into labor and Dan can’t get a hold of the vet or the scientist. He goes to Jamie and Mary, a couple on the run from her family who is staying illegally on Dan’s land, for help. Jamie goes with Dan, they deliver the calf, who is horribly mutated. The newborn calf bites Dan’s hand. Later, the vet shows up and after killing the calf and storing it in another part of the barn, leaves. Hours later, the vet comes back to the farm, unknown to anyone else and gives the dead calf an examination. She finds out the calf had been born pregnant but with what? Sometime before the vet came back, whatever the calf was carrying had gotten out and was now loose on the farm. The vet starts looking and then the scene changes.

The others on the farm find out a monster had been born and Jamie is attacked by it. The scientist comes back and tells them that no one can leave the farm now, everyone there could be infected, like the vet was. They find the vet’s body and now they are searching the farm for the monster. They can’t find anything while its dark so, Jamie and Mary go back to their motor home and make love, not knowing that Jamie is now infected.

The scientist decides to take matters into his own hand and kills Jamie to prevent the spread of the infection. He tries to kill Mary, who wasn’t attacked and the scientist dies instead. Now, its up to Dan and Mary to kill the monster. Dan dies to save Mary and she finishes the monster off and walks off the farm.

The last scene takes place about 3 months later, in a doctors office with Mary getting an ultrasound of her baby. The doctor assures her the baby is fine but is it really?

Population 436

May 15, 2008

What if you came to a town, stayed over night and then learned you couldn’t ever leave or you would die? Welcome to Rockwell Falls, population 436.

The opening scene shows a man dying when he tries to get out of town and a baby being born.

This town has a dark secret, one that Steve Cady, a surveyor for the US Census Bureau finds out the hard way. Sent to peaceful Rockwell Falls to find out why the population hasn’t changed in a hundred years, Steve learns the truth of the matter. Determined to leave and take a young girl who also wants to leave with him, Steve starts having bad dreams of a car crash. Finally, the two are able to leave and start out driving fast on the main highway past the town, elated that they are free. That is until the big truck hits their vehicle and kills them.

The end scene shows Steve and the girl dying in the car crash and twins being born in the town.

One Missed Call Movie Review

May 12, 2008

“One Missed Call” is about a possession through a cell phone. Without giving away the ending, there are several people that get a phone call on their cell phone. The phone call is missed and dated in the future. For example, one person gets a missed call that is time stamped two days into the future.

When the characters listen to the phone call messages, it is time stamped into the future. The call is made from that character saying something. At the time of the future phone call, the character dies.

All of the characters have a hard, red candy in their mouths at the time of death. The lead detective handling the case believes that the deaths are linked to his sister’s freak accidental death.

“One Missed Call” does not allow any time to get to know the characters and relate to them. You are left with the feeling of “so what” when they start dropping dead like flies. The detective doesn’t receive a call to die. It is really hard to connect with the characters at all.

After the first two deaths, the movie could’ve moved onto the final wrap up. There was really no suspense. There was very little gore. The movie was extremely predictable.

One Missed Call gets all thumbs down from me. Save your money and skip it.

The Ring

April 29, 2008

Okay, I’ll be honest with you. I hate horror movies. Most of the time, I laugh my way through them because of how obvious they are and how stupid they are. Not to say that the ketchup blood has definitely gained some better graphics, but the plots and scare tactics just bother me.

However, when I watched “The Ring,” I had a new respect for horror. At last, there was a story line and a mystery that was combined with the horror. This start with a journalist who finds a video tape that has killed some teenagers. She now has to find exactly what killed these youth and why. Her investigation is what leads her to finding the “horror catch” as well as solving a mystery that you get to solve along with the main character.

This film came out in 2002 (I know, it’s still kinda old). The star is Naomi Watts, acting as Rachel Keller, the journalist. Her side kicks are Martin Henderson, David Dorfman and Brian Cox.

Oh, and for a little extra history of this film, this was a re-do of a Japanese film on the same topic, known as Ringu. The Japanese version is said to be more of the mystery side than the horror side when it was put together. And, for those of you who actually do like horror, you can follow this up with the Ring Two. It’s just as good.

So, if you are not a horror buff, like me, start with ‘The Ring.” It’s definitely better than an actual horror movie, with some good substance and a story line that keeps you involved, not just through adrenaline rushes.

The Exorcist

April 17, 2008

The Exorcist is a classic and I guarantee if you’re watching a horror movie from back in the day, you will see nothing like it. The movie is a masterpiece that catches the viewer’s attention by making it feel as though you are there.

In the movie, there is a young girl named Reagan who, out of the blue, begins acting very strangely. There are extreme changes in her personality and mood, not to mention all of the unexplained things happening in the house.

Because Reagan’s mother is extremely worried about her, she takes her to numerous doctor’s in order to have random tests done on her to see exactly what is wrong. The doctor’s can’t seem to find a thing so they automatically assume that it’s some sort of psychological disorder. Because Reagan’s mother doesn’t believe this is so, she calls in a priest.

During the priest’s sessions with young Reagan, things begin to get more out of hand than ever. The young girl stabs herself with a crucifix, begins speaking in another language in a voice that is not her own, her eyes change into a demon-like state, and all of these effects seem completely real.

The exorcist is an amazing movie with a great cast. Linda Blair was only a young girl when she played Reagan, but she did an outstanding job to say the least. I would have scared myself so much that I’d have to give up the role. No matter what day and age we’re in, I believe that the Exorcist will remain a classic that everyone can watch without having to fast foward through the boring parts. The movie is well put together for the time that it was made.

This movie is one of those that will never be forgotten.

Day of the Dead (R:2008)

April 12, 2008

Day of the Dead (Rated R: 2008)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489018/
Directed by Steve Miner with Screenplay by Jeffrey Reddick. Starring : Mena Suvari, Ving Rhames, Nick Cannon, and may others.
An interesting flick based off of George A. Romero’s classic flick “Day of the Dead”. The military comes in to enforce a quarantine and stop the spread of the disease that seems to have infected this small town. Not at all like the original Day of the Dead, this movie takes place in one of the historic mining towns in Colorado known as “Leadville” where a military lab experiment goes wrong and causes an epidemic of magnitude proportions. As people perish, survivors realize that the virus is creating the walking dead who crave human flesh. A wild race of zombies invades the town like no other zombies often displayed … they are full of rage, faster, stronger. Only a small number of people are immune to the virus and those few survivors must battle to fend off the infected zombies while trying to make it out of town alive. I thought the movie was decent, especially since I’m a big fan of Mena Suvari who I thought played a tough yet very compassionate soldier. I thought her and several of the others acted very well, but the movie just was missing something. I’m also not sure if I’m a big fan of fast running zombies. Some of the graphics, makeup, and special effects were good. Rating: 3 stars out of 5.

The Vault of Horror Movie Review

April 7, 2008

The Vault of Horror was released in 1973 and is making a comeback. It is based on a set of men that are trapped away in a basement. They begin to tell their tales and the story unfolds. The eerie part of this movie is the thoughts that these men share with one another. There are some gruesome scenes that you will need a stomach for.

I found myself riveted to the screen and captivated by the minds of these men that were trapped in the basement.
Out of 5 stars, I’d give this movie 3 stars.
