Shirley Temple - America’s Sweetheart Collection, Vol. 1
May 17, 2008
For those who loved the classic Shirley Temple movies, they are available on DVD. I purchased this particular collection and love it.
Volume 1 includes the movies, “Heidi”, “Curly Top” and “Little Miss Broadway”. “Heidi” is my favorite and about an orphan named Heidi who lives with her cruel aunt. The aunt decides that Heidi is too much for her to take care of and drops her off at her grandfather’s house.
Heidi’s grandfather is a grumpy outcast and having a young child live with him is the last thing he wanted. Heidi adapts and grows to love her grandfather, as he eventually grows to love her as well. Unfortunately, Heidi’s aunt comes back to kidnap her and takes her to a wealthy man’s home to be a companion for his seemingly disabled daughter, Klara. Heidi works miracles with Klara and the two become best of friends. Still, Heidi is missing her grandfather immensely. Her grandfather will do anything to get Heidi back.
This collection has an added perk. You have the option of viewing in color or black and white. Either way, the collection is great family entertainment from days gone by.

Juno
April 24, 2008
The heart-warming Independent film “Juno” took 2007 by storm. Ellen Page plays the quirky high school student who faces an unexpected pregnancy. In a difficult enough world, Juno stays true to her humor and independence. Instead of terminating the pregnancy, the witty teen chooses to search for people to adopt her unborn baby.
Through Penny Saver advertisements, Juno meets Mark and Vanessa Loring (Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner). As Juno’s pregnancy progresses, she spends more time with the Lorings and discovers some of the secret complexities life has to offer.
“Juno” is filled with touching scenes and loveable characters. It’s one of the only teenage pregnancy films which will leave you feeling good and uplifted. One impressionable scene was when Bren (Allison Janney) confronts Juno’s condescending ultrasound technician. “You think you’re special because you play picture pages up there?” She says. “My five-year-old daughter could do that, and let me tell you, she isn’t the brightest bulb in the tanning bed.”
Excellent humor, dialog, and acting makes the movie stand out against the backdrop of so many other forgettable films. Similar to the main character herself, “Juno” is uniquely smart and independent.
16 Blocks Movie Review
April 24, 2008
16 Blocks is another great Bruce Willis movie that you are sure not to miss. It is filled with a great deal of action and you can truly feel compassion for the characters. The first part of the movie takes place in a few minutes. The remainder of the movie takes place in real time. Def Moser did an excellent performance as supporting actor in this movie as well.
This is a DVD that you definitely want to rent over a weekend. You will probably want to watch it twice. There are little things that you can miss the first time around.
I give this movie 4 stars out of 4
Mercury Rising Movie Review
April 24, 2008
Mercury Rising is another great hit for Bruce Willis. Alec Baldwin gives an outstanding performance is this action packed thriller as well. When a boy with Autism discovers the secret to an International code, things take a turn. With people dieing all around him and no-one believing him, Bruce Willis has his hands full trying to save the boy.
Mercury Rising handles the issue of Autism with tact and care. I was able to connect to the boy that was being rescued and also to Bruce Willis’ character. At times, I found myself trying to help the pair out and warn them. I know that they couldn’t hear me but it was that intense of a movie.
I give Mercury Rising 5 stars out of 5
Training Day Movie Review
April 24, 2008
Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke give an outstanding performance in the movie, Training Day. Training Day is based on a cop getting transferred. He’s a rookie and needs to be taught the ropes. However, his training leader is not so up and up. In the end, the events of Training Day end up being hair raising and action packed.
What amazed me about the movie Training Day was that it all happened in one day’s time. There was so much action that I couldn’t believe it was all in such a short time span. You were given the opportunity to connect with the main characters and truly feel for them. This was a big advantage. Without this connection the movie would’ve been a flop.
I give this movie 5 stars out of 5.
“Unfaithful”
April 15, 2008
Diane Lane stars as Connie Sumner who is the wife of Ed Sumner played by Richard Gere. They have a happy life, including a son and a beautiful home. Connie is the last person anyone would believe could be drawn into an intense affair with another man.
During a windstorm, while chasing a taxi, Connie falls. She has a chance encounter with a handsome man, Paul Martel, played by Olivier Martinez, who offers for her to clean up at his apartment. Paul is French and a book dealer. He gives Connie a poetry book as she is leaving. Connie tells Ed about what happened, but doesn’t go into detail.
When looking through the poetry book at home, Connie finds Paul’s business card. She calls him and he invites her once again to his apartment, this time initiating a dance. Connie is hesitant and leaves because she knows it’s wrong, but forgot her coat and has to go back to Paul’s apartment. This is when the chance encounter becomes consuming and life-shattering. Paul embraces and kisses her and she cannot deny his force.
Connie knows she should stay away from Paul, but something draws her in - again and yet again. Paul has a mysterious and seductive allure and Connie finds ways to be with him at any cost.
Ed begins to get suspicious. Small things begin to add up until he decides to hire a detective. This sets the stage for an unexpected death, one which is covered up - at least until a last scene where Ed and Connie are parked in front of the police station.
“Unfaithful” clearly shows the intense and high cost of betrayal, so intense the viewer might think twice before having an affair. There is much suspense and drama in this movie. Gere and Lane deserve praise for their roles. “Unfaithful” is rated R for language, a scene of violence and sexuality.
September Dawn (R: 2006)
April 14, 2008
September Dawn (R: 2007)
Director:Christopher Cain; Actor/esses: Terence Stamp … Brigham Young;
Jon Voight … Jacob Samuelson; Trent Ford … Jonathan Samuelson;
Krisinda Cain … Young Woman; Shaun Johnston … Captain Fancher;
Jon Gries … John D. Lee; and many more.
An intriguing film based off true events. Apparently this film has hit quite a controversy with the Mormon church as it retells the tale of the September Massacre of gentiles in Utah. I think it was a great retelling of the trajedy that took place during the immigrant pioneering of the American wild west. Every faith and people have their monsters. The tragedy took place, just as did the Holocaust, the Witch Hysteria, and many other massacres. There is doubt as to who caused it and was responsible for this horrible historical incident. I thought the movie was good at presenting historical facts from the vague-ness that we know today; excellent acting; fabulous cinematography, and amazing scenery.
Academy Award winner Jon Voight plays Local Mormon Bishop Jacob Samuelson who becomes suspicious of some gentiles from Missouri who need food, supplies, and rest before finishing their journey to California. As they stop near Cedar City Utah, Jacob dispatches his eldest son to spy on them and see what they are up to while preaching to the choir that these people are cursed and must die. His son falls in love with the minister’s daughter and rebells against his father’s death wishes for the settlers. The father weaves unspeakable horror setting up the local Paiute Indians by dressing up as them and doing a brutal mruder of 120 men, women, and children on September 11, 1857. The love story was probably fictionized, but following some of the historical facts of this renegade sect that probably caused this massacre, i think the film presents a very plausible theory. Rating 4.5 stars out of 5.
