Angela Bassett - A Leading Lady

April 30, 2010

Angela Bassett, an African-American actress, broke past the boundaries of color, becoming one of the most respected leading ladies in Hollywood. She became very popular on the movie set with films like, “What’s Love Got to Do with It”, portraying the role of Tina Turner. This movie showed the trials Tina Turner went through with her husband in the music industry. Angela Bassett won 2 awards for this film—1994 Best Performance by an Actress—1995 Outstanding Lead Actress.

Angela Bassett also starred in two films playing the mother role of musicians who have died in the past. She played the mother, Katherine, of the Jackson Five in, “The Jacksons: An American Dream”. This movie focused on the life of the Jackson Five and their music career from childhood to adulthood.

Bassett also played Voletta Wallace, Christopher Wallace’s mother (‘The Notorious BIG)—in the movie “Notorious”. He was an east coast rapper for Bad Boy Records—who was murdered on March 9, 1997. Angela Basset’s performance in this film showed Notorious Big fans how much his mother really loved him.

I really enjoy the movies Angela Bassett plays in because of her sincerity in each role and how she gives it her all.

Redd Foxx-Tribute to One of the World’s Funniest Men

April 25, 2010

John Elroy Sanford aka ( Redd Foxx) was born December 9, 1922 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was well- known on the television show “Sanford and Son”, as Fred G. Sanford. The funny thing about his middle name on the sitcom was that the “G” could stand for many different words depending on his mood.

Redd Foxx aka (John Elroy Sanford) – made a name for himself and was one of the first black comedians ever to perform in front of white audiences.

Although he never graduated, Redd Foxx never let that stop him from doing what he was brought to earth to do and that was to “be funny”. He worked as a plumber and did acting jobs ever chance he could.

As a kid I would watch him on Sanford and Son for hours and hours. He was so funny, and a great entertainer. He would attempt to have fake heart attacks and yell that he was going to see Elizabeth—his departed wife in heaven.

Unfortunately, we lost Redd Foxx on October 11, 1991 due to a heart attack. The weird part was that a few of his friends thought he was playing like he was having “The Big One”, but this time it was for real –What a Funny Guy!

Meinhardt Raabe- The Wizard of Oz

April 23, 2010

Meinhardt Raabe was born, September 2, 1915 and passed away on April 9, 2010, due to a heart attack at the age of 94.

Meinhardt Raabe was one of the last surviving munchkin actors from the film “The Wizard of Oz”. In this film, he played the corner character who confirmed the wicked witch was dead.

Meinhardt Raabe also had the opportunity to work as a spokesman for Oscar Mayer in which he was known as - Little Oscar, the World’s Smallest Chef.

Meinhardt Raabe, and the surviving other munchkins, still kept the memory of “The Wizard of Oz” alive in fans’ hearts by attending conventions and celebrations around the world.

As a fan of the movie, “The Wizard of Oz”, I must say that this movie is one that I will always remember and share with my children in generations to come.

“The Wizard of Oz” was released August 25, 1939 and directed by Victor Fleming.

Taylor Lautner

April 23, 2010

Taylor Lautner is one of the most popular stars in the movie industry today. He started his acting career on the television show “Shadow Fury”, playing the character Kismet.

Taylor began making appearances on”Summerland”, “Bernie Mac”, and “My Wife and Kids”. He also became popular on kid movies and cartoons, “What’s New Scooby –Doo”, and ‘The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl- 3D”.

I have to say that I really enjoyed his role in the vampire movie, “Twilight”, and “New Moon”, as Jacob. For the “New Moon” film, Taylor had to train and gained 30 pounds to continue his starring role in this film.

I really look forward to more movies with Taylor Lautner. He is one of the most popular and highest paid teen actors right now. He really set an example for a lot of teenagers that want to pursue an acting career– if you just put your mind to it you can be whatever you want to be.

The Canadian actor, Corey Haim, was born December 23, 1971. He was considered a teen heart-throb in the 80’s. He started his career on the television show, “The Edison Twins”, and shortly after, in films.

Haim play Sam in the movie, “Lost Boys”, a boy who enjoyed reading vampire horror comic books. To Sam’s shock, a vampire was lurking in his own home. . This movie won three awards with five nominations. Corey Haim received the award for best performance by a young actor in 1988 for this film.

Another movie that Corey played in was “Silver Bullet”, as Marty. He was a young, energetic boy that was paralytic. Even though he had a disability, nothing stopped him from being a kid. The town he lived in was a very small and quiet, but that changed when people started getting killed. Marty realized who the killer was, but no one believed him. Unfortunately, the world lost Corey Haim on March 10, 2010. Even though we lost him, he will always be a legacy in our hearts.
