Surviving the Game (1994)

April 17, 2010

“Surviving the Game” is about a homeless Seattle man named Mason, played by actor and rap artist, Ice T.

Mason no longer valued life because he lost everything he loved–his family, and friend. He attempted suicide by running in front of a vehicle, until a strange man from a soup kitchen saved his life.

Mason was very furious with the man because he felt like he had nothing to live for. The guy felt sorry for Mason and offered a job to help him get off the streets. He referred him to Thomas Burns played by, Rutger Hauer who was a business man recruiting men to become hunters.

Mason decided to check out Thomas and see what kind of money he was talking about and what the job requirements were. The job required flying to a secluded cabin in the Pacific Northwest and meeting up with the rest of the hunters. Some of the hunters had a major obsession with hunting, and took hunting very seriously.

When Thomas met with Mason he noticed that he smoked cigarettes and was concerned with Mason’s health. Mason assured him that he would do anything to get out of poverty.

After careful consideration, Thomas gave him the job. The hunters that Mason met had an obsession for hunting. They encouraged Mason to eat well, and be prepared for the hunt in the morning.

The question is, “What were they hunting”?

This is an action-packed movie, full of adventure and suspense.

The Black Hole (2006: PG)

January 30, 2009

Blackhole (2006: PG) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0433883/
Director: Tibor Takács; Starring: Kristy Swanson … Shannon Muir; Judd Nelson … Eric Bryce; David Selby … General Ryker; Heather Dawn … Sgt. Alicia Bennett; Jennifer Lyn Quackenbush … Elizabeth Williams; Christa Campbell … Advisor Coldwell; Peter Mayer … General Tate; and many more. Rated PG for sci-fi violence, peril and thematic elements. It’s your typical physics experiment goes bad. Down low in a atomic research facility outside of St. Louis, Missouri; scientists somehow tear the fabric of space and time opening a black hole. The hole is the least of their worries as some kind of energy predator comes out terrorizing the city and power grid, disintegrating humans and sucking energy. Linked to the blackhole this creature feeds the hole to enormous proportions. A drunk-up Judd Nelson who plays the washed up military scientist chases after it with the ever-cute Kristy Swanson trying to capture the energy monster and put it back in its hole. Its definitely a B-rate flick, but worth a laugh. Effects are ok, but nothing to write home about. Rated: 2.5 stars out of 5.

Interstate 60: Episodes of the Road (R: 2002)

Interstate 60: Episodes of the Road (R: 2002)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0165832/
Director: Bob Gale. Starring: Matthew Edison … Quincy, Paul Brogren … Zack, Wayne Robson … Tolbert (Deep Stomach), Gary Oldman … O.W. Grant, Michael J. Fox … Mr. Baker, James Marsden … Neal Oliver, Melyssa Ade … Sally, and many more.
Rated R for language and sexual references.
Gale brings together an insightful modern movie about the whole entity that grants wishes - but this time, an American legend of one. No Genii in the bottle. No Leprauchaun, but America’s own O.W. Grant - a trickster compiled of all the tricksters of world mythology. He’s half-leprechaun and he smokes a pipe with smoke and glowing eyes that is representative of the Djinni. Quote from Neal in the movie: Given an infinite universe and infinite time, all things will happen. That means that every event is inevitable, including those that are impossible. And it’s as good an explanation for all of this as anything else. Now, a lot of stories start in bars, so that’s where we’re going to start this one. Not because I was there - I wasn’t. But because it’s a damn good introduction to a very unique… fellow. While the story is interwoven with various tales about others who were affected my this magical O.W. Grant, it focuses on a young artist named Neal. Neal is bombarded by pressures from his father to choose a different profession, and he can’t seem to get the guts up to stand up to dear old Dad. But then Neal meets O.W. Grant. Grant offers everyone he meets “one” wish as his name implies. Neal’s wish is for “answers”. So he is routed to take a road trip on the non-existent Interstate 60 upon which he seeks to find the girl of his dream that seems to appear on every blank billboard over his journey. He runs into bizarre towns and hillarious sitations including a town of lawyers ready to sue everyone for anything, and a town that is all about a Rave drug called Euphoria. It has character and elements of “Drop Dead Fred” but much more mild. I rather thoroughly enjoyed this tale. Rating: 4 stars out of 5.

Rated PG-13 for brief war violence, sexual content, language and smoking.
Fincher did a spectacular masterpiece by weaving together this phenomenal film. Its the heart-felt story and adventure of Benjamin Button - a orphaned on the doorstep baby that is born an 80 year old man. As he grows older, his body grows younger, and in a way does life backwards. It wonderfully demonstrates that age is simply a number, and shows that we as people can choose our own destinies and life decisions, whatever we want to do in live, regardless of age. Its extremely thought-provoking and quizzical. Played by Brad Pitt who plays Benjamin - forever in love with Daisy played by Cate Blanchett. First love as the 80 year old 8 year old boy, in love with the 8 year old girl that by the time they merge one another’s lives is in their 30’s when they meet in the middle. Riveting. A must see. Rating: 5+ stars out of 5.

Rogue (R:2008)

Rogue (R: 2008)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0479528/
Director: Greg Mclean. Starring: Radha Mitchell … Kate Ryan, Michael Vartan … Pete McKell, Sam Worthington … Neil Kelly, Caroline Brazier … Mary Ellen, Stephen Curry … Simon, Celia Ireland … Gwen, John Jarratt … Russell, and many more.

Ah this flick really inspires me to go to Australia. Its a tale about a Chicago travel writer who goes to the Northern Territory of Australia to review a riverboat wildlife cruise. Little did he know what to expect with the term “wildlife”. First some locals harassing the lovely boat captain. After which when she goes to investigate a flare up river, finds themselves attacked by a Lake Placidly large crocodile who picks one-by-one the tourists off as they try to figure out how to get across the river from the sandbar upon which they are stranded with an ever rising tide. They try everything they can think up, until its a fight for survival to escape the “hell” they cruised into. Its a typical adventure-horror Crocodile attacks humans kind of music, but this time - not an overgrown sewer alligator in New York, but one in its home territory. It has its value. Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5.
