Doomsday (R: 2008)

August 19, 2008

Doomsday (2008: R)
Director: Neil Marshall. Starring: Caryn Peterson … Vagrant Girl; Adeola Ariyo … Nurse; Emma Cleasby … Katherine Sinclair; Christine Tomlinson … Young Eden Sinclair; Vernon Willemse … David / Gimp; Paul Hyett … Hot Dog Victim; and much more.
Alright, this one is a poor-hash of several flicks: Terminator meets Mad Max meets Escape from New York meets I am Legend. Can you get more creative? please? A lethal virus spreads throughout England infecting millions and killing hundreds of thousands. The authorities block off London and parts of Britain in hopes to quarantine the threat. The country turns to fear and chaos and creates their own world and civilization within the walls. Just like the premise and worldview from the flick “Escape from New York”. Three decades later and the Reaper virus surfaces in another major city outside the quarantine area. So an elite group of specialists go into the zone to retrieve a cure - and thus is the premise of the story. Sound familiar? too much. Yes. There are some artsy moments, and some of the costumery rock, but all in all this film lacks everything. Rating: 2 stars out of 5.

Journey to the Center of the Earth (PG: 2008)

August 19, 2008

Journey to the Center of the Earth (3D) (2008: PG)

Kaniehtiio Horn … Gum-Chewing Girl; Garth Gilker … Sigurbjörn Ásgeirsson.
The classic is re-visited with star Brendan Fraser heading into the unknown with his nephew in search for his brother. Teamed with the beautiful and thrill-seeking Hannah, they stumble upon an old mine that treacherously leads them to the Center of the Earth - a biosphere full of strange and prehistoric life that radiates amazement and passion. As they realize the temperatures are rising it becomes a deadly race to escape back to the surface. A wild journey awaits as they meet in-your-face creatures and pitfalls. Fun and adventurous, and the 3-D is certainly enlightening. Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (R: 2008)

August 13, 2008

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (R:2008)
Director: Rob Cohen. Starring: Brendan Fraser … Rick O’Connell; Jet Li … Emperor Han; Maria Bello … Evelyn O’Connell; John Hannah … Jonathan Carnahan; Michelle Yeoh … Zi Juan; Luke Ford … Alex O’Connell; Isabella Leong … Lin; and many more.
The Mummy returns to the blockbuster screen with a new twist as the adventure goes to Asia instead of Egypt. The retired couple O’Connell’s decide to go back to work as they take an offer they couldn’t turn down where they are ployed into resurrecting the Han Emperor (Jet Li) and go through a quest ranging from the catacombs of ancient China into the frigid Himilayas. Rick (Brendan Fraser) reunites with his son who joins the adventure - Father, son, wife, brother - a family affair off to stop a 2,000 year old mummy curse that threatens the existence of life as we know it. An immortal double-crossing sorceress assists them in stopping the Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors that are the silent terra cotta army that comes alive. Great adventure and twists … even though I liked the first movies best, this one was worth its weight in terra cotta. Rating: 4 stars out of 5.

The Dark Knight (R: 2008)

July 24, 2008

Dark Knight Rated R: 2008

Director:
Christopher Nolan
Starring: Christian Bale … Bruce Wayne / Batman; Heath Ledger … The Joker; Aaron Eckhart … Harvey Dent / Two-Face; Michael Caine … Alfred Pennyworth; Maggie Gyllenhaal … Rachel Dawes; Gary Oldman … Lt. James Gordon; Morgan Freeman … Lucius Fox; and many more.

The saga continues and getting better all the time - the costumes, the special effects, the artistry, the acting … all top notch. Especially the Joker. Dark and violent, definitely not for young children. Christian Bale does a great job as batman, but Heath Ledger blows everyone’s acting potential out of the sky with his role as “The Joker” - he had the insane madman down to a “t” and even un-nerved me throughout the movie. One of the best psycho roles I’ve seen. The rest of the cast are excellent as well. Is it time for Batman to retire? I won’t spoil that one for you. This story has some twists and turns leaving you unexpectedly pleased with the outcomes. The tale is about Batman out to eliminate crime in Gotham city and very much being mistaken for a havoc-causing vigilante; but on the side of chief commissioner Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent. However just as they are about to smash out organized crime, the Joker appears as a madman extroadinaire, throwing both the good and the bad into chaos in an attempt to kill Batman, Gordon, and Dent. Rating: 5 stars out of 5. Viewed 7/18/08.

Never Back Down

July 14, 2008

When my hubby bought this DVD for us to watch. I was kind of hesitant because of the title. I don’t like action movies. He said it’s about Mixed martial Arts, so that made me think twice. But when we watched it, it was okay. Kind of like the Fast and the Furious 2 Storyline. New boy in town, trying to stay out of trouble. He likes a girl but this girl belongs to his rival. Sounds familiar eh? The fight scenes are great though

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)

June 24, 2008

I’ve been a fan of sci-fi and adventure movies and hearing about another up coming Mummy movie is like music to my ears. I think Brendan Frasier has made the Mummy series a box office series even from the first one. This 3rd film of the Mummy will surely be a highly awaited film especially for me! And hey I forgot to mention!! Jet Li is the villain in this film he’s playing the role of Emperor Han! Pretty interesting huh!! =)

Explorer Rick O’Connell to combat the resurrected Han Emperor in an epic that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Rick is joined in this all-new adventure by son Alex, wife Evelyn and her brother, Jonathan. And this time, the O’Connells must stop a mummy awoken from a 2,000-year-old curse who threatens to plunge the world into his merciless, unending service. Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress to spend eternity in suspended animation, China’s ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have laid forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army. But when dashing adventurer Alex O’Connell is tricked into awakening the ruler from eternal slumber, the reckless young archaeologist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents. As the monarch roars back to life, our heroes find his quest for world domination has only intensified over the millennia. Striding the Far East with unimaginable supernatural powers, the Emperor Mummy will rouse his legion as an unstoppable, otherworldly force… unless the O’Connells can stop him first.

Will Smith as Hancock

June 24, 2008

After a series of super hero movies, here comes another one that’s not your typical super hero movie. Will Smith’s last movie I’ve seen - I am Legend is not a hit for me. Yes he made big ones before and I’m really hoping that this would be one of his great films ever.

here are heroes… there are superheroes… and then there’s Hancock. With great power comes great responsibility — everyone knows that — everyone, that is, but Hancock. Edgy, conflicted, sarcastic, and misunderstood, Hancock’s well-intentioned heroics might get the job done and save countless lives, but always seem to leave jaw-dropping damage in their wake. The public has finally had enough — as grateful as they are to have their local hero, the good citizens of Los Angeles are wondering what they ever did to deserve this guy. Hancock isn’t the kind of man who cares what other people think — until the day that he saves the life of PR executive Ray Embrey, and the sardonic superhero begins to realize that he may have a vulnerable side after all. Facing that will be Hancock’s greatest challenge yet — and a task that may prove impossible as Ray’s wife, Mary, insists that he’s a lost cause.

Wanted Trivia!

June 19, 2008

- McAvoy had screen-tested for the role early in 2006 and was initially rejected due to the studio seeking an actor that had conventional Hollywood leading-man looks and physique.

- The actor was later recalled, being considered the “runt of the litter” of those who tested. According to McAvoy, “They [ultimately] wanted someone geeky.” The Scottish actor, who portrays an American in the film, trained for the film’s action scenes.

- Comic book creator Mark Millar says he “didn’t like the first draft of the script” calling it “too tame” and “Americanized.” He then says Timur came in and “really made it nasty. He went closer to the spirit of the book.”

- Director Timur Bekmambetov said that the film would keep the same characters from the miniseries, though the director would take liberty in adapting the comic book’s world. Millar says the first half of the film is close to the graphic novel and though the film’s ending was similar, it was relocated elsewhere from the novel’s setting.

- The superhero costumes in the graphic novel were removed, with the exception of the leather attire worn by Wesley Gibson and The Fox.

- The story arc of the Fates issuing death orders is new to the film, an addition Millar liked.

- The action will include free running and parkour in addition to car chases and gunfights. The film will also be the first to use the Red One digital camera, a new tool that has gained interest among cinematographers.

- In July 2006, screenwriter Chris Morgan was hired to revise the third act of the Wanted script written by Haas and Brandt. The script was also rewritten by screenwriter Dean Georgaris to include the role of The Fox for actress Angelina Jolie. Haas and Brandt returned to even out the voice of Wesley Gibson, which they had established in their first draft.

- Wanted was initially set to be released in cinemas on March 28, 2008, but in December 2007, Universal announced it would be pushing back the release date to June 27, 2008.

Up and Coming: Journey to the Center of the Earth

June 13, 2008

Such a long title but i guess it would still catch a sci-fi fan’s attention. i love these kind of flicks, The Core has been a nice movie about the earth’s interiors and I am hoping that this one would beat that. Having seen the trailer, i think this one’s to watch out for. Stars Brendan Frasier of the Mummy I and II.

A science professor’s untraditional hypotheses have made him the laughing stock of the academic community. But on an expedition in Iceland, he and his nephew stumble upon a major discovery that launches them on a thrilling journey deep beneath the Earth’s surface, where they travel through never-before-seen worlds and encounter a variety of unusual creatures.
