The Devil Wears Prada

June 15, 2008

Applying as an assistant to the editor-in-chief is a job that millions of girls would die for, and yet a smart but simple town girl without the slightest sense of fashion gets the slot. Fresh college graduate Andrea Sachs struggles to survive the strenuous time-consuming work, the overwhelmingly chic milieu, and most of all, the supremacy of her boss-from-hell – a totally different world. I watched the movie because of its catchy title, The Devil Wears Prada, and because of the fact that I prefer watching movies that are based on novels. I was surprised that the movie was the not the typical Hollywood movie worth-watching-only-in-a-comfortable-couch-at-one’s-own-home-in-VCD-or-DVD-form. I liked the idea that she tries to work at a very different line just to establish connections to journalists and other prominent publishing networks.

I like the character of the devil. Yes, obviously, the devil is the boss! Miranda Priestly is the devil wearing Prada from head to toe! Meryl Streep played the role well, thinking that she’s already old! I guess it added substance to the movie.

Anne Hathaway, who played the lead character Andrea Sachs, definitely transformed from a fairytale character (Ella Enchanted and The Princess Diaries) into a more sophisticated young woman. In the film, she also transformed, of course not from a fairytale character but from an old-fashioned girl to an absolute chic. A comedy with a tinge of drama plus an elegant wardrobe and lots of couture, set in the busy streets of New York to the romantic fashion city of Paris, this movie would definitely appeal to fashion gurus, style addicts and fashion victims as well.
