Women get ready to invest in a hat box and an electric knife! This fabulous funny movie stars Melanie Griffith at her all time best in my opinion. It really makes you wonder why she does not do more comedy as she was just born for this perfect role! Her husband Antonio Banderas’ actually directed the movie and did a wonderful job. This is an older DVD release from 1999 or so but is well worth searching for as you will not be at all disappointed.
It is set back in the 1960′s and the focus of the movie is Melanie Griffith’s character who has killed her abusive husband and leaves her children with her mother and sets off on a quest to become a star in Hollywood. She has a special nephew who is twelve years old that she intrusts her secrets with and she sets off.
The movie follows her young nephew as much as it does her in telling this story. It contains a great lesson in the world of race that was a huge issue back in the sixties and shows how it effects all around the country at that time. The movie shows how you must overcome your past and how one must stand up for what is right no matter what the cost.
The movie is hailed as a comedy but could also be considered a drama for all the wonderful acting abilities and all of the poignant feelings as the young nephew does what is expected of him and even what is not. Lucas Black plays the nephew, Peejoe, David Morse plays the brother to Melanie Griffith’s character and Meat Loaf Aday plays the sheriff that everyone comes to hate.
This movie is rated PG-13 and is a great movie to sit and watch with young teens for the content that it brings about. It is approximately 113 minutes long and worth every last moment. The end is as good as the beginning and the middle is just as enjoyable. It leaves you itching to see more of the talents of Melanie Griffith and shows what great talent that she possess.
