“Rob Roy”
February 28, 2008
A western film set in Scottish Highlands, “Rob Roy” is loosely inspired by the life of a Scot named Robert Roy MacGregor. His battles aren’t only with the feuding landowners, but also within himself. Liam Neeson plays the role of Robert Roy MacGregor, along side Jessica Lange as his wife, Mary MacGregor.
Rob has borrowed a significant amount of money from the Marquis of Montrose, John Graham, played by John Hurt. An acquaintance of the Marquis has plotted to steal the money and this leaves Rob’s family in threat of their land being taken over if the debt cannot be repaid. Rob is offered a way out, but has to choose between saving his land and saving his honor. He refuses to allow his enemies to destroy his honor and the love of his wife gives him the strength and will to fight.
The visuals are breathtaking. The soundtrack is equally captivating and the sword fighting is some of the best seen on film. Neeson and Lange intermingle romance into the movie and fit their roles perfectly.
“Rob Roy” is rated R for violence and sexuality and is directed by Michael Caton-Jones. This is a strong movie in many ways, depicting history and also sending a message of how honor is something a person gives to themselves. A superb movie that deserves a 5 out of 5 star rating.
