“Rob Roy”

February 28, 2008

A western film set in Scottish Highlands, “Rob Roy” is loosely inspired by the life of a Scot named Robert Roy MacGregor. His battles aren’t only with the feuding landowners, but also within himself. Liam Neeson plays the role of Robert Roy MacGregor, along side Jessica Lange as his wife, Mary MacGregor.

Rob has borrowed a significant amount of money from the Marquis of Montrose, John Graham, played by John Hurt. An acquaintance of the Marquis has plotted to steal the money and this leaves Rob’s family in threat of their land being taken over if the debt cannot be repaid. Rob is offered a way out, but has to choose between saving his land and saving his honor. He refuses to allow his enemies to destroy his honor and the love of his wife gives him the strength and will to fight.

The visuals are breathtaking. The soundtrack is equally captivating and the sword fighting is some of the best seen on film. Neeson and Lange intermingle romance into the movie and fit their roles perfectly.

“Rob Roy” is rated R for violence and sexuality and is directed by Michael Caton-Jones. This is a strong movie in many ways, depicting history and also sending a message of how honor is something a person gives to themselves. A superb movie that deserves a 5 out of 5 star rating.

The Legend of Bagger Vance

February 27, 2008

Will Smith and Matt Damon give striking performances in The Legend of Bagger Vance movie. Initially when I saw that his movie was about a golf player, I was less than impressed. I am really not into golf at all. However, I was captured by the movie and really liked it a great deal.

Even though the movie centers around the main character finding his swing, it is a very believable movie. In fact, I had to look it up later to find out if it was based on a true story or not. It was that believable!

The acting is very believable and real. The concept and message of the movie is something that even young teens could learn from today. I would give this movie 5 stars out of 5 stars.

Vantage Point Movie Review

February 27, 2008

We decided to head to the movie theater instead of renting a movie. There are a lot of good choices out there. Vantage Point caught my eye because of the reviews. Each time I saw the preview trailer on the television, I knew that I just had to go see this movie!

After getting into the theater and all settled in, I was anxious and excited. The movie starts off very dramatic and action packed. You are immediately drawn into the characters and the setting. After the first 10 minutes though, be prepared to sit through the action again and again. Literally. Were they on a tight movie budget?

The primary scene where the president is assassinated repeats from a different character’s point of view. So you are seeing the exact same scene over and over with a few little different twists and a little bit of information. This technique, I don’t enjoy. I felt as though the entire movie could’ve been shot and told in about 20 minutes.

I give this movie a 3 out of 5 stars.

Look Who’s Coming to Dinner Review

February 27, 2008

A friend suggested that our family watch, Look Who’s Coming to Dinner. It was an excellent family movie for everyone in your family to watch. The message of the movie is very powerful and encourages tolerance of human choices. There are some very funny parts to the movie. We rented it to watch with our family.

The actors play their parts extremely well. You can really relate to the characters and the message is that love is strong no matter what. Love is in fact completely color blind and parents should accept their children for who they are. After all, parents are the ones that raised their kids and should trust their children’s judgments.

I give this movie a 5 out of 5 stars for a family movie.

“Chain Reaction”

February 26, 2008

“Chain Reaction” is directed by Andrew Davis and rated PG-13 for some intense action and violence.

Keanu Reeves plays Eddie Kasalivich, who is involved with a team, in a ground-breaking scientific experiment, which will produce a pollution-free energy source. He finds himself surrounded by secret government cover-ups, espionage and even murder. Dr. Lily Sinclair, played by Rachel Weisz, is part of his team.

Once the source of energy is developed, the laboratory and also much of the surrounding area, even blocks away, is destroyed. The effects would have you to believe there was a nuclear explosion.

Eddie and Lily become the main suspects. They hope Paul Shannon, played by Morgan Freeman, will be on their side. He’s a secretive man and they aren’t sure which side to believe he’s on.

Eddie and Dr. Sinclair are framed and everyone is out to get them. They are on the run while trying to figure out who wants to stop their project and why.

Reeves and Weisz play well against each other and you get a sense of chemistry between the two, although no love story is played out. This isn’t Freeman’s best performance, but he certainly adds to the movie.

“Chain Reaction” has action, thrills and some good visual effects, but some may get lost with the plot. Overall, it’s a good movie, but not exceptional. I give a 4 out of 5 stars.

Fool’s Gold

February 26, 2008

For Dirt Pitt (Sahara) fans, Fool’s Gold may be the closest thing to a sequel we will ever see. Fool’s Gold stars Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson as Benjamin and Tess Finnegan, a divorcing married couple treasure hunters. A new clue into the whereabouts of a lost treasure and a series of unusual circumstances brings the couple back together.

McConaughey and Hudson have chemistry as seen in the movie ‘How to lose a guy in 10 days.’ But can they rekindle that to make this movie worth watching?

Fans of Sahara will enjoy seeing McConaughey in this treasure hunter roll. McConaughey’s character is not as smart as Dirt Pitt and really needs his female counterpart. Those looking for a romantic comedy might be disappointed since there is some romance but not that much.

The action is OK, the story a little slow. I was hoping for more but thought the movie was enjoyable. It might not be one you remember six months from now or recommend to your friends. But if you immerse yourself in disbelief and just set out to enjoy an action-adventure, then Fool’s Gold should make for an enjoyable evening.

Her marriage to husband Brian, played by Henry Ian Cusick, is falling apart. She needs a peaceful atmosphere to find a way to heal and rest. Jumper

February 20, 2008

Starring Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson and Diane Lane, Jumper is a huge success. I was riveted when I sat down to watch this movie. Quickly, I was captivated by the first sequence of events. Based on a genetic trait from his mother, the leading character is able to jump to places that he has been before. The movie was extremely interesting and very action packed. There were times when I thought that I knew what was going to happen but then the movie would surprise me.

I would give this movie 5 stars out of 5. It has a great cast. Good story line. It is very entertaining.
