Black Dahlia Wilts At The Box Office
September 18, 2006

What is successful as a book does not mean a successful movie is sure to follow. Tom Hanks is proof of that in both ways. Forrest Gump was a very successful movie and even won him an award and if many are not aware, it was a book first. However, The Da Vinci Code was a very powerful book that sold millions and the movie flopped like a fish out of water.
This does not stop the people in Hollywood from bringing out movies that are book-based every year and so they brought us The Black Dahlia. The book itself is based on the true story of the murder of starlet Elizabeth Short from the 1940’s. On a dark night she was murdered, her body cut in half, drained of its blood, her organs removed, and her mouth cut ear to ear in a chilling smile. The crime was never solved, and some say because his mother was murdered in an unsolved case James Ellroy became caught up in the unsolved case of the Black Dahlia and was as obsessed with the case as the characters in his book.
I thought from the previews that the movie seemed “ok” but it was not something that I was going to see. Standing in line at the box office that wouldn’t even be the last on my list. I’m not saying the movie is awful but I don’t think that this is the kind of movies that most people want to see. If we want to hear about an unsolved murder we just need to turn on the evening news. I would only see this movie if a gun was to my head and even then I might choose the bullet if it would save me from a two hour snoozefest.
It also doesn’t help that the reviews from those who have seen it is less than stellar.

The Wicker Man (2006: R)

The Wicker Man (2006: Rated R) http://thewickermanmovie.warnerbros.com/ Starring: Nicolas Cage …. Edward Malus; Ellen Burstyn …. Sister Summersisle; Kate Beahan …. Sister Willow; Frances Conroy …. Dr. Moss; Molly Parker …. Sister Rose/Sister Thorn; Leelee Sobieski …. Sister Honey; and many more. A re-make of the cult classic: “The Wicker Man”; a story about a policeman who gets notice of a disturbing disappearance of young Rowan on a off-the-grid island in the Pacific Northwest (instead of the British Isles as in the classic). He finds his way to the island to investigate the disappearance that turns to a grim fate for the young Rowan. He soon discovers its a Pagan island and the old Gods are still being worshipped. Unlike the original, it has a matching, but different storyline, as he’s not as pious as the British policeman, and they left out some of the sexual innundation that the classic held. This tale suffers in comparision with the original and disgraces the whole story in my opinion. Whereas the classic was much more aligned to true Paganism if it survived on a island untouched by Christianity; this tale, weaves a negative image of Paganism, turning it primarily Goddess worship and making the men nothing more than breeding servants. Cage did an ok job, but still didn’t take the cake. Good effects however as Hollywood souped up the imagery. Costuming and settings were great. Story sucked. The makers of the film however need a good dunking in the ice cold sea or a wicker cage of their very own to be burnt alive. Wait for Netflix, it’s not worth the ticket price. Rating: 2 stars out of 5. Viewed 9/9/06. |
Pirates Swing High
September 11, 2006

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 has been moving up the list of all time gross at the box office. It has now become only the third movie to ever make $1 billion at the movie theatres. The top slot is still held by 1997’s Titanic with $1.8 billion, and #2 “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” with $1.1 billion.
The third Pirates sequel is being shot now and is slated for a May 2007 release.
Sherrybaby Review
September 10, 2006

Sherrybaby stars Maggie Gyllenhaal as a 19-year old heroin addict who has just been released from prison. She is now clean and sober and also trying to get back custody of her daughter who is being cared for by her brother and wife.
Sherry struggles against umemployment, parole restrictions and life itself as she tries to move forward but seems to be taking giant steps in the other direction.
The movie was beautifully done and was something I had to see after I came across the trailer online. To get a real feel of this movie you can read this in-depth review that really takes you into the heart of the movie and explains who Sherry really is.
