Cinemas in Japan introducing ‘fragrant films’

April 17, 2006

The world’s first fragrant film will be shown in Japan this Saturday — and it’s gonna be… drumroll, please… Colin Farrell’s historical drama “The New World.”

As the movie plays, a computerized fragrance system that offers 6 kinds of aromas (including forest and citrus) will emit scents from under cinemagoers’ seats, “depending upon the scenes being shown.”

Right now, the system is just being tested. For instance, only certain seats in the Salonpas Louvre Marunouchi (one of the two ‘guinea pig’ cinemas, located in Tokyo) are rigged up as “aroma premier seats.”

If customers react positively to the fragrances, maybe we can expect to see — er, smell — some fragrant films in the U.S. sometime soon…
