More of The Small Screen Makes It To The Big Screen

April 21, 2006

Gurinder Chadha announced today that she would be directing the movie version of the popular night time soap opera “Dallas”. John Travolta and Jennifer Lopez are already on board for the big screen adaptation with more big names sure to follow. They will begin filming in October and the Dallas has a tentative release date of late 2007.

The director Gurinder Chadha is making I Dream of Jeannie a motion picture but says the script is only half completed at this point. No release date has yet been announced.

Like I said before nothing original ever in Hollywood. I didn’t see Bewitched the movie and doubt I will go to see Dallas or Jeannie. At least the Scary Movie franchise has a reason to show us things we have seen in other movies. What’s the general excuse of every other “blockbuster” that comes out? They want to cry and say that the internet is the reason movie sales were down and I say make better movies and you might see them go up.

Cinemas in Japan introducing ‘fragrant films’

April 17, 2006

The world’s first fragrant film will be shown in Japan this Saturday — and it’s gonna be… drumroll, please… Colin Farrell’s historical drama “The New World.”

As the movie plays, a computerized fragrance system that offers 6 kinds of aromas (including forest and citrus) will emit scents from under cinemagoers’ seats, “depending upon the scenes being shown.”

Right now, the system is just being tested. For instance, only certain seats in the Salonpas Louvre Marunouchi (one of the two ‘guinea pig’ cinemas, located in Tokyo) are rigged up as “aroma premier seats.”

If customers react positively to the fragrances, maybe we can expect to see — er, smell — some fragrant films in the U.S. sometime soon…

Scary Movie 4 - Back With A Vengeance

April 17, 2006

Well I must admit that I didn’t think that Scary Movie 4 was going to be a flop, but I certainly didn’t see it breaking any records. It did however. Today it was announced that scary movie is the first movie to take in $41 million on an Easter weekend.

The creators have said that they will be making a 5th movie in the franchise.

Ice Age: The Meltdown Movie Review

April 13, 2006

Ice Age part 2 was ok at best, it wasn’t excellent. I love the first movie but this one seemed like it was made just because there was still more money to squeeze out of the franchise. The movie wasn’t necessary and it seemed like it had no where to go but they decided to make it anyway. The only one’s who will think it’s the best thing ever is children under 9.

For this feature the main character’s are back including that poor Scrat who can never seem to get that darn acorn. The animals are happy to see that the ice age is over and that under all the melting ice is a lush and beautiful new world.

However there are drawbacks including the huge damn that’s about to wash everything away in their valley. The only thing that they can do is make their way across the very dangerous valley to try and reach the other side.

It is something to entertain the kids but nothing more than that.

Kiefer Sutherland Reveals 24: The Movie, Is Coming

April 10, 2006

Actor Kiefer Sutherland has confirmed that a 24: The Movie is in the works. They are working on the script right now and he says that they might be shooting this summer. The movie obviously won’t take us hour by hour like the tv show but Sutherland believes that it would be a summary of what took place over a period of 24 hours. He also believes that some characters, long since dead on tv, would be resurrected for the movie.

Via Mtv News

“If we ended up doing [the movie] as a prequel and going back before the first season, obviously there’s a lot of things that could change. If we go for it much further down the line from where the show is, again, there’s a lot of room to change. It depends on the timing that they choose to set the film in.”

“[The timing issue] is something the writers are working on right now,” Sutherland added. “But the sky’s the limit at that point for them, because we would not be restricted by the time element.”

The possibility of a prequel will undoubtedly set the fingers of chat-room-savvy fans wiggling on their keyboards faster than Chloe data-mining a thumb drive. It could hearken back to a time when Jack was actually still collecting a paycheck from the Counter-Terrorism Unit and, as Sutherland happily acknowledged, when memorable characters such as President Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), Victor Drazen (Dennis Hopper) or Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard) were still alive. It would also, most definitely, guarantee a return of Bauer’s ill-fated wife, Teri (Leslie Hope).

“That’s been the hardest part about the show,” admitted Sutherland, who recently signed a deal that will extend the Fox drama for three more years and elevate him to the position of executive producer. “Leslie Hope … became a great friend of mine. When you find an actor that you can work with like that, and have that kind of faith with, the idea of having to let them go is really painful.”

Another old friend Sutherland says he would love to work with again is Louis Lombardi, whose schlubby Edgar Stiles had evolved into a breakout character until a recent brush with nerve gas led to his shocking death. “That was hard,” Sutherland said of the decision to dispatch Stiles. “God, he played that scene well. I remember I was standing by the monitor and, obviously, I wasn’t in that sequence. I had just come in and I was getting ready to do something after that. I just caught the tail end of it. I watched him do that scene and my heart broke.

I think a 24 movie would actually work. I know that firefly was a flop, which was surprising to me, but I never watched the tv show and didn’t watch the movie. 24 is a show I watch every week and the only one that leaves me mad when it’s done for the week. Everyone who works in every position on that show does a great job and I am never left disappointed. Unless they pick people who are complete idiots, I can’t imagine the movie not doing well.

The 40 Year Old Virgin

April 10, 2006

The 40 Year Old Virgin was funny. Not uproariously so, but enough to brighten up a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Steve Carrell, Daily Show regular and titular virgin, did a great job. Gotta give him credit for the chest-waxing scene, which was real. Pretty impressive — first, that anyone is so hirsute, and second, that Steve was brave enough to allow his ample chest hair to be waxed into a smiley face.

Speaking of hair, my impression of the movie was slightly altered by the final scene, a Hair-inspired musical that featured cast members singing and prancing around in what looked like togas. A little disturbing. It reminded me of the ending of one of the Austin Powers films — a similar (and equally unnecessary) music video type of thing.

Anyway, overall, it as good. Forgettable, sure, but fun while it lasted. I give it 6 out of 10 stars.

Eternal Sunshine vs. Vanilla Sky

April 9, 2006

Neat title, eh?

I saw both Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Vanilla Sky recently.

They were similar, surprisingly. Both use convoluted dream sequences and a lot of temporal craziness to disorient the viewer.

Still, they had their differences:

Which is easier to follow?
By the end of Eternal, I basically understood everything that went on. I can’t say the same about Vanilla.
Winner: ESotSM

Which had the bigger stars?
Depends on if you like beautiful people or quirky people. Vanilla featured Cruise, Cruz and Diaz; Eternal had Carrey, Winslet, and Dunst.
Winner: Tie (…though I do tend to favor quirkiness)

Which had the better soundtrack?
With REM, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and Sigur Ros, Vanilla beats Eternal hands-down.
Winner: VS

Which would I see again?
Eternal Sunshine, definitely. Vanilla, only if I had nothing better to do.
Winner: ESotSM

Summer Movie Blockbusters 2006

April 9, 2006

Every year we have a whole new list of blockbuster movies to go see or avoid at all costs. Here is a list of some of those movies for 2006. Can you tell which will be a flop and which will strike it big?

I will be going to see MI:3, even though Tom Cruise has proven multiple times last year that he’s completely insane. I would also like to see X-Men and Pirates since I saw the previous films and enjoyed them.

Poseidon I’m a little iffy on whether or not I would like to see it. I saw the original which came out in the 70’s or was it the 80’s? I can’t remember these things. I do recall watching that movie repeatedly through-out the 90’s and I loved it and still do. My problem with remakes especially in this technology age is the fact that the studios and directors and whoever decides that they can do so much better because they can do things they couldn’t 10 or 20 years before.

This leads to a crappy storyline and sometimes no plot at all, just so they can throw more CGI and special effects at us. Hey Hollywood we know what can be done with computers. How about showing the new generation a movie that they want to go see and not just because of an action sequence you showed in the previews. Action sequences that usually turn out to be the only action worth seeing.
