Van Sant’s Last Days, or Sleeping Pills? Either will do.

Product Image: Gus Van Sant's Last Days
My rating: 1 out of 5

I really, really wanted to like this movie. I’ve seen the documentary ‘Kurt and Courtney’ and was a huge fan of Nirvana back in the day.

But this … this is supposed to be Kurt Cobain’s final hours?

No, more like, one overrated director’s, just, like, opinion, man. (Big Lebowski reference, anyone?)

The film started off with Blake (the Cobain-esque character) wandering around the forest outside of his hillside mansion. He then proceeded to venture down to the river / stream nearby, disrobe (not completely, ladies), and have himself a pee. Deep, man. So deep.

And yes, I get the possible Siddhartha / Buddha reference, but it was too painfully slow, boring and just trying way too hard to be deep for my tastes.

All in all, I couldn’t even finish the thing. Maybe it heats up near the end and there are some car chases or something (kidding…. :) ), but the first 30 minutes nearly put me to sleep.

Mirrormask

Product Image: Mirrormask
My rating: 5 out of 5

I was really anticipating Mirrormask, and it did not fail to deliver. At first, I didn’t really get what I was kind of expecting, which was fine. From the previews it looked like it was going to be full of lush animation. As it begins, it’s a regular movie. But then, gradually more and more of the movie unfolds inside of the drawings, illustrations, and head of the main character.

This movie is a real trip into the head of an artist and _is_ lushly animated. Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman really did a great job realizing a world of imagination that has not only has a pretty solid plot but is a visual delight. It’s pretty much like visual crack for artists.

Serenity

This review does not ruin the movie. Serenity is based off of Firefly, an old tv show that was cancelled. Dvd sales of the show allowed for a movie to be made and they did not scrimp the edges in this one. Great special effects, fantastic storyline and a soundtrack that adds to the feel….
